Imagine being homeless for ten years. Sadly, for Michelle it was the reality.
I don’t know what my life would be like today without Parramatta Mission.
It’s only now that I realise how terrible things were. Sleeping on a friend’s lounge or worse, on the streets, became the norm for me. After struggling with addiction and being homeless for ten years I’m very lucky to have the second chance I have now.
When I first walked into Meals Plus I was there for food and a place to shower, I never expected to go regularly and become friends with the staff and volunteers. But no one ever judged me, not once. When you live on the street you get used to the funny looks and people changing direction rather than walk too close to you. Some people look away rather than make eye contact. You question your own value when another person can’t even look at you.
When you stop caring, it’s even worse because you look for the quick fixes to fill the empty parts of your life. I turned to drugs, some turn to alcohol, violence or worse.
I feel I’m reborn now, I have clean clothes, a safe place to live and some part time work. I still need some help here and there, but I know I can speak to someone from Parramatta Mission when I’m having a bad day. I look forward to tomorrow now, because I have a routine and a purpose again in life.
So many people have helped me get back on my feet, I don’t want to let them down. I want them to be proud of me and I want to be proud of myself.
Please support Parramatta Mission generously. I know better than anyone how valuable they are to our community, I owe them my life.
