What is Lifeline?


Lifeline is an anonymous and confidential* crisis telephone counselling, support and information referral service, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Anyone who has access to a telephone can call Lifeline from anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call.

There are currently 42 Lifeline centres Australia wide answering over 500,000 calls per year

Lifeline receives calls from people of all ages, backgrounds and belief systems.

Lifeline telephone counsellors are men and women, aged 20 and over, also from varied backgrounds and belief systems, who volunteer their time to work on the phones.

Lifeline volunteer telephone counsellors complete a 16 week intensive training course.

Lifeline counselling is non-directive and non-judgemental, with an unconditional positive regard for all callers.
